Glasgow Lands Scottish Festival, July 2002
Fourth Time Around
EventsThe Caber Toss

I have no idea when the Scots got the notion to be tossing around old telephone poles,
but they've turned it into a back-breaking sporting event which your humble reporter has
no intention of ever trying. Maybe I'll test it out using those cardboard fillers that come
wrapping paper.
The Civil War Re-Enactors

Or, at least, their campsites. There were, I believe, a few Scottish-based regiments in the U.S. Civil War, which
was hardly a "civil" war. Many had their own pipes and marching bands.
The Dancers

A Highlands dance competition.
There was also a Bonnie Knees competition, where the men bared their kilted bonnie knees for
examination by blindfolded women. Alas, the lighting was suboptimal for photography! (There IS something
about a good man in a kilt...) Plenty of bonnie knees walked around without entering the contest.
The Bagpipe Competitions

Like these gents! The competing bands of pipers practiced in the shade -- it was shaping up to be a HOT day, and kilts are,
after all, wool.
The Harpists
Now these are a local consort of harpists, who played exquisitely!
